Why Join JEMKC?

Journalism Educators of Metropolitan Kansas City (JEMKC) serves Kansas City area teachers of journalism, photography, yearbook, newspaper, broadcast and web–teachers like you! If you’re already convinced and ready to join for this school  year, just click here to fill out the online membership form and here to print a customizable invoice for payment.

One of our biggest conveniences for you is our website, JEMKC.org. Here you can find information about membership and current members, fill out your membership forms online and track your membership progress. Plus, find Executive Board contact information, teaching materials, event information, a list of member awards and all of your contest and scholarship details in one easy place.

This year our executive board will be posting a weekly tip/resource/tool/idea/story on the website and our social media sites to provide even more resources for our members. If you would like to contribute, email President Megan Palmer. You can find these tips here at JEMKC.org or on our social media sites: Twitter @jemkcnews or our Facebook page.

We have a variety of activities for our Professional Community planned for this year, including the continuation of monthly “PLC” Adviser Nights at schools around the metro. We had great turnouts for these last year and heard from so many who benefited from this opportunity for collaboration and learning together.

We will also hold a Fall Social on September 10 and continue our tradition of the Winter Brunch, to be held at Brio on January 23. Spring Contest information will be distributed at the Winter Brunch. Watch for more information as the dates approach, and mark your calendars!

The JEMKC Spring Contest offers your staffs the opportunity to enter work in nearly 50 newspaper, website, yearbook, photography and broadcasting categories. In addition, more than $2200 in scholarships are awarded, including Excellence in Journalism Scholarships, excellence in writing and photography scholarships, as well as camp/workshop scholarships for juniors. Contest deadlines will be announced at the Winter Brunch. Spring Awards Night will be in late April 2016.

We also have a special opportunity for NEW MEMBERS (or those who have not been a member in the last 3 years): one year of free membership! New members are also eligible for special contest categories and new summer workshop scholarships. Come see all we have to offer and our hope is that after attending educational meet-ups and social gatherings and entering your students in our contests, you’ll be excited to be a member from here on out. All new members need to do is fill out the online form and you’re good to go!
